Upwork Client Fees 2026: What It Costs to Hire

Freelancer working from home on a laptop while planning project costs

Hiring on Upwork costs more than the freelancer’s quoted rate. In 2026, clients on Upwork’s free Basic plan pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on freelancer payments, plus a one-time Contract Initiation Fee when a new contract starts.

Prices checked November 1, 2026.

Fees checked 3 November 2026.

Main recurring client fee: up to 7.99% on payments under Upwork’s free Basic plan.

New-contract fee: currently up to $4.99 for new contracts under $100, depending on the contract and account factors.

Bottom line: budget for platform fees before you compare freelancer quotes, especially when hiring multiple people or creating several short contracts.

What Is the Upwork Client Marketplace Fee?

Upwork’s official client pricing page currently states that clients on the free Basic plan pay a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99% on payments made to freelancers. The fee can apply to fixed-price and hourly contracts, Project Catalog purchases, bonuses, Direct Contracts, consultations, payroll, expenses and other eligible charges.

Upwork also states that eligible U.S. clients who pay using a qualifying bank account may receive a reduced 3% Client Marketplace Fee. Eligibility and payment options can vary, so confirm the fee shown in your account before hiring.

What Is the Contract Initiation Fee?

Upwork also charges a one-time Contract Initiation Fee when a client starts a new Marketplace or Project Catalog contract. The current official fee is up to $4.99 for new contracts under $100.

The exact amount can vary based on factors such as contract type, account history and hiring activity. Upwork says the fee is paid once for each new contract, even if you have worked with the same freelancer before.

A Simple Upwork Hiring Cost Example

Suppose you agree to a $1,000 fixed-price project

If your Client Marketplace Fee were 7.99%, that fee alone would be $79.90. A Contract Initiation Fee could add up to $4.99, depending on the factors mentioned above.

At the top rates, the all-in cost is up to $1,084.89 for a $1,000 project ($1,000 + $79.90 + $4.99). If no initiation fee applies, it is $1,079.90.

This example is only a budgeting illustration. Your actual fee can be lower, and the initiation fee is shown by Upwork before the relevant charge.

Why Small Contracts Can Feel More Expensive

A one-time initiation fee has a larger percentage impact on a very small contract than on a large one. If you create many separate micro-contracts, the repeated setup costs can matter. That does not mean you should combine unrelated work into one contract, but it is worth considering contract structure when planning a project. If your project is a website, pair the fee calculation with our WordPress developer hiring and milestone guide.

Hourly vs Fixed-Price: Does the Fee Change?

The Client Marketplace Fee can apply to both hourly and fixed-price payments

The Contract Initiation Fee also applies when a new contract starts, but the timing differs: Upwork says fixed-price clients typically see it when funding the contract or first milestone, while hourly clients see it with the first payment.

How to Budget for an Upwork Hire

  • Start with the freelancer’s quoted project price or expected hourly cost.
  • Add the client marketplace fee shown in your Upwork account.
  • Allow for the one-time Contract Initiation Fee.
  • Budget separately for software, paid assets, stock media or third-party services.
  • Keep contingency for revisions or scope changes.

Do Not Choose a Freelancer Based Only on the Lowest Quote

The cheapest proposal can become expensive if requirements are misunderstood, deadlines slip or the work must be rebuilt. Evaluate relevant work samples, communication quality, client feedback, project understanding and the freelancer’s proposed process.

For larger projects, milestones can help reduce uncertainty by separating planning, implementation, review and final delivery.

What We Saw in a Live WordPress Job Snapshot

On October 24, 2026, BigExclusives performed a read-only search of the 10 most recent Upwork jobs with “WordPress” in the title. Seven were fixed-price and three were hourly. Proposal competition ranged from “Fewer than 5” to “20–50,” showing why budget alone does not tell you how competitive or attractive a posting will be.

This was a small dated snapshot—not a representative study of the entire marketplace—but it illustrates how widely project type, budget and applicant competition can vary.

How to Reduce Hiring Waste

  • Write a specific scope instead of a vague job description.
  • Define what “done” means before the contract starts.
  • Ask candidates to explain their approach to your exact problem.
  • Use a paid test milestone only when it represents real project work.
  • Keep key decisions and approvals documented in Upwork messages.
  • Do not expand scope casually without revisiting budget and timeline.
